Bil Clemons, elected to the National Academy of Sciences
Warmest congratulations to Bil Clemons for his election to the US National Academy of Sciences! Bil was a Graduate Student in our department from 1995-2000, where he worked with Venki Ramakrishnan to determine the first molecular structure of the small subunit of the bacterial ribosome. He was then a Postdoc with Tom Rapoport at Harvard, where he determined the crystal structure of the bacterial protein translocation channel. He has been a Professor at Caltech since 2005, where his laboratory has done seminal work on the structural and mechanistic basis for targeting tail-anchored proteins to the ER, developing new methodology for expressing and characterizing membrane proteins, and peptidoglycan biosynthesis and N-linked glycosylation in bacteria.
